Guest host Heidi Montag surprised viewers of The View today by bringing along husband Spencer Pratt for some banter about their not-so-private private lives. The topics covered sex, marriage and babies in the baby carriage -- or, more accurately, no babies in the baby carriage.
Spencer sat in the front row and fielded questions about his previous public admission about their dwindling sex life.
Why? Because Spencer unequivocally does not want to have children and, as they all acknowledged, the only way to be 100 percent sure you won't get pregnant is to not have sex.
Heidi, who was dressed in a very casual jeans-and-blazer getup, explained why they're abstaining.
"I wanna have children sooner than later," she said. "My husband doesn't at all, ever. He wants to have surgery to make sure we don't."
As for the obvious question of why this issue didn't come up before the two exchanged vows, Heidi said they did discuss having children, but she thought he was joking about not wanting them, and that they would "get to that hurdle" after they were married.
Heidi says she wants "four or five" kids, and wants to get started right away because she liked having a young mother and would like the same for her children.
When asked to share his side of the story, Spencer, ever the pitchman said: "Well, if you tune into this season of The Hills..." But the ladies weren't having it and pressed on with the question.
"She hints she's going to go off [the pill] and not tell me," Spencer said.
Heidi admitted that "mistakes happen" and that sometimes you can miss a pill, and even so, it's only "like, 99 percent effective."
Of course there are other forms of contraception, but Spencer isn't interested in those.
"Women have a way of poking holes in condoms," he explained.
The couple seemed to dodge the larger question of what this says about the level of trust in their marriage.
Regarding Spencer's adamant stance against procreation, he referred back to what Whoopi told him and Heidi when they last appeared on The View -- that they would "end up in the street" if they didn't get their act together.
"Kids would speed up the path to homelessness," he said.
While she does want to get on the mommy path as soon as possible, Heidi's desired family timeline won't necessarily spell the end of their marriage. She said she's willing to wait a couple of years for Spencer to get his "young man-ness" out of the way.
