Help Build Math Skills: Cube Calendar

Older children will enjoy using adult tools to carve this unique cube calendar from matching wooden blocks. Kept on a bedroom desk or bookshelf, it can help them keep track of the months and seasons.

What this activity will develop:
Math, physical and art skills

What you'll need:
• 2 wooden cubes (1" sides)
• Small block of wood cut 3" x 2" by 1"
• Hammer
• Wood chisel
• Permanent marker
• Paint or varnish (optional)

What to do:
1. Carve an indentation 2" long, 2/2" wide, and 1/2" deep in the center of the small wooden block using a hammer and wood chisel.

2. Print numerals on the cubes. First cube: 0, 1, 2, 6, 7, 8. Second cube: 0, 1, 2, 3, 4, 5.

3. Paint or varnish cubes, if desired. Let dry thoroughly.

4. Place the cubes in the indentation.

Use:
Turn the cubes each day to show the date.
