Help Build Reading Skills: Big Initials

A great project for kids who are just learning to read and write, this activity reinforces prereading skills and small-motor skills. It also taps into kids' creative skills as they collect personalized pictures to glue onto their initials.

What this activity will develop:
Reading, art and physical skills

What you'll need:
• Construction paper
• Scissors
• Glue
• Magazines
• Newspapers

What to do:
Have kids cut out their initials from large sheets of construction paper. Then have them look in the magazines and newspapers for pictures and words that describe their hobbies, likes, family, talents, favorite school subjects, foods and travel spots. Ask the students to glue these items on their initials to create their own personalized collages. Hang the finished project on the refrigerator or on the door to their rooms.
