Yesterday, we got an unusual Facebook invitation -- from Speck Mellencamp, the 14-year-old son of "Jack and Diane" rocker John Mellencamp. Do we know John Mellencamp's son personally? Can't say we do. But he needs a million friends to join his group in order to save his dad's health.
Mellencamp suffered a heart attack in 1994, at age 42, due to high cholesterol and smoking. He has famously failed to quit smoking, despite the dangers. So Speck, who sometimes performs with his father, is taking things into his own hands.
Speck's Facebook group, "1,000,000 to join, my dad john mellencamp will quit smoking," is part of a deal with Mellencamp: if Speck gets a million people to join, his dad will quit smoking. In an NPR interview this weekend, Speck explained that his dad is taking the deal seriously: "He says that if a million people do that, then if somebody sees him doing it he'll seem like the bad guy, so he'll kind of have to."
Last time we checked, the Facebook group was at almost 250,000 members, although Speck says his dad has "cut back a lot because it hit 100,000." To help John Mellencamp quit smoking, just go here and click "join." His family will thank you.
