These Hollywood couples prove that either opposites attract or love is blind. Find out how they make their unusual pairings work. Kate Hudson and Chris Robinson
Birth Dates: His: December 20, 1966, Hers: April 19, 1979
Age Difference: 13 years
Their Story: At the time they met, she was Hollywood's 21-year-old "It Girl" -- fresh from starring roles 200 Cigarettes and Cameron Crowe's Almost Famous. The daughter of Goldie Hawn (and also raised by Kurt Russell), Hudson had been romantically linked to Lenny Kravitz and Matt LeBlanc. Meanwhile, Robinson, crooner for the southern rock-n-roll band the Black Crowes, had been romantically linked most often to drugs and alcohol, but seemed to be trying to kick some of his more destructive rock-star tendencies.
Their Nuptials: Having known each other less than a year, the couple tied the knot at a 2000 New Year's Eve ceremony at Hudson's family ranch in Aspen Colorado. Family and close friends attended the small 19th-century themed wedding. Kate looked stunning in a Vera Wang original and Chris, well, he looked ... just happy (read: lucky) to be there.
Their Offspring: Kate is still the baby in this family, though it has been rumored that the couple is considering adoption.
What They Have to Say: The young starlet told Harper's Bazaar: "Here's a man who's done and gone through everything that I've only read about in books. Not only is that a part of him, it makes him the most intelligent and incredible creature I've ever met."
Woody Allen and Soon-Yi Previn
Birth Dates: His: December 1, 1935, Hers: October 8, 1970
Age Difference: 35 years
Their Story: One of most publicized and controversial pairings in recent history, Woody and Soon-Yi have had an uphill battle convincing both the public and Soon-Yi's mother (who was, at the time, Woody's lover) that their relationship is, well, normal. A brief recap: (1) Soon-Yi was adopted at age eight by Farrow and Andre Previn during a trip to Korea. (2) Two years later, Woody and Mia began a relationship that lasted more than a decade. (3) Farrow found nude pictures of 21-year-old Previn in Allen's apartment in 1991. (4) Media chaos ensued. But, it seemed like Woody's affection for his longtime lover's daughter was more than fatherly. Five years after their affair (reportedly) began, Woody popped the question.
Their Nuptials: The director and Columbia University graduate student exchanged vows in a tiny ceremony at Palazzo Cavalli, the city hall in Venice, Italy, in December 1997. The mother-of-the-bride/mother-in-law was not present.
Their Offspring: Grab your calculators -- with Soon-Yi, Allen has two daughters: Bechet Dumaine (December 1998), whom, if you can believe it, Woody and wife have never quite confirmed whether they adopted or gave birth to, and Manzie Tio whom they adopted after she was born in Texas (February 2000). Woody and Mia had three children during their relationship: Moses (adopted), Dylan (adopted) and Satchel (biological). And yes, custody battles were quite the controversial issue between the sparring and spurned exes.
What They Have to Say: Woody says of the May-December romance: "Interestingly, it wasn't hard for us to keep focused during the difficult times because of all the media attention and criticism. If anything, it brought us closer together."
Eric Clapton and Melia McEnery
Birth Dates: His: March 30, 1945, Hers: 1976
Age Difference: 31 years
Their Story: The couple met in 1999, allegedly after McEnery approached the guitar genius for an autograph. At the time he was a rock legend visiting Tinseltown to work on an album with B.B. King, and she -- less than half his age -- was a graphic artist from Ohio trying her luck in Los Angeles. Clapton, leader of rock groups Cream, The Yardbirds, and Derek and the Dominoes, was never as lucky in love as he was on the charts. He had been married to Patti Boyd for nine years, a model he had stolen from his best friend at the time, Beatle George Harrison, and for whom he wrote the songs "Layla" and "Wonderful Tonight." He then had two children, Ruth Kelly (born 1985) and Conor (born 1986), with two different girlfriends. After a year-long courtship with McEnery, the couple broke up, and then reunited shortly before she became pregnant.
Their Nuptials: The unlikely duo surprised guests who thought they were simply attending the 2002 New Year's Day baptism of their six-month-old love child, Julie Rose. The ceremonies took place at the 15th-century Chapel of St. Mary Magdalene in Ridley, England, where the guitarist was raised. Clapton's son, Conor, who died after falling from a window in New York apartment 10 years prior, is buried near the chapel. After the baptism, Clapton and McEnery were called forward by the vicar and exchanged vows.
Their Offspring: Clapton's daughter Ruth, 17, is from a previous relationship, and the couple announced in June 2002 that McEnery is pregnant with their second child.
What They Have to Say: Immediately following the wedding celebration, Clapton's publicist, Vivian Gibson, told the press: "He has nothing to say."
Ozzy Osbourne and Sharon Osbourne
Birth Dates: His: December 3, 1948, Hers: October 10, 1952
Age Difference: 4 years
Their Story: If you haven't seen this "Behind the Music," it's high time you got to know the *&@!%ing Prince of Darkness a little better. Sharon and Ozzy Osbourne, stars of the wildly popular true-life show The Osbournes, have become the 21st century's answer to Ozzie and Harriet. Recently celebrating 20 years of marriage (and by celebrity standards, that's an even more amazing feat), Ozzy and Sharon met when her father, Don Arden, was the manager for Ozzy's heavy metal band, Black Sabbath. Truckloads of drugs and alcohol (and one failed marriage for Ozzy) later, Sharon, quite literally, picked the singer up off the floor of his apartment and forced him to start cleaning up his act. Through rehab, dove and bat beheadings, and numerous Ozzfest tours, Sharon and Ozzy have proven that even rock stars know how to take out the garbage -- happily.
Their Nuptials: Ozzy and Sharon were married on a beach in Hawaii on July 4, 1982. Soon after, the crucifix-obsessed couple bought out Ozzy's contract from Sharon's father, and she took over the management duties. With a well documented ball-buster persona, she continues to negotiate million dollar deals for her family.
Their Offspring: In addition to two children from Ozzy's previous marriage to Thelma Reilly, Ozzy and Sharon have three children of their own: Aimee (September 2, 1983), Kelly (October 27, 1984) and Jack (November 8, 1985). While Aimee decided against appearing in The Osbournes, Kelly and Jack, who are both involved in the music industry, seem to relish the attention. Kelly has just released her first single, a rocked-out, glitzy cover of Madonna's "Papa Don't Preach."
What They Have to Say: Ozzy told People, "She's not allowed to die before me. I couldn't live without her."
Ric Ocasek and Paulina Porizkova
Birth Dates: His: March 23, 1949, Hers: April 9, 1965
Age Difference: 16 years
Their Story: There's John Cougar Mellencamp and Elaine Irwin. There was Billy Joel and Christie Brinkley. But before them all, there was Ric and Paulina -- the original unpretty rock star/stunning model couple. Born in Czechoslovakia, Porizkova was discovered by an Elite model scout in her teens and has been on countless magazine covers since. Although she has always been extremely vocal about her hatred for the modeling industry, she was the spokesmodel for Estee Lauder and was named as one of People's 50 Most Beautiful People in 1990. She also gave acting a try, most notably alongside Tom Selleck in Her Alibi, for which she won the not-so-coveted Razzie Award for Worst Actress. She met Ocasek in 1984, the lead singer for pop band The Cars, on the set of his music video for "Drive." It was, quite understandably, love at first site for the tall, dark singer. Porizkova even claims that her crush on the front man had begun years earlier when she saw him on TV.
Their Nuptials: The towering duo tied the knot five years after they met on August 23, 1989 and have since lived in New York City with their children. Paulina has said that the secret to their long-lasting relationship is simple: "to stay together physically as much as possible." In an effort to accomplish this, she turned down the role as the Bond girl in Goldeneye.
Their Offspring: After they married, Porizkova became the stepmother to Ocasek's four sons from a previous relationship. The couple has since added to two more sons to their family, Jonathan Raven (December 1993) and Oliver Orion (May 1998).
What They Have to Say: Says the supermodel: "Meeting Ric was a teen's wet dream."
Courteney Cox Arquette and David Arquette
Birth Dates: His: September 8, 1971, Hers: June 15, 1964
Age Difference: 7 years
Their Story: She was born and raised in Alabama; she was the first woman on TV to say the word "period" (in a Tampax commercial); she cut a rug with Bruce Springsteen in his "Dancing in the Dark" video; she's one of the Friends; in 1995 she was the cover girl of People's 50 Most Beautiful People issue. He was born into a successful Hollywood family; he's the 1-800-CALL-ATT spokesman; he's in a rock band called EAR2000; he frequents magic shops; he's been a WCW Thunder wrestler; he looks like your brother. Yet somehow, on the set of 1996's teen thriller Scream, this unlikely pair made an unlikely pair -- on and off screen. A few years later, their wedding invitation featured the couple dressed in Halloween costumes (Arquette was a squirrel and Cox wore a blond wig) and the caption read: "We're nuts about each other." Indeed.
Their Nuptials: On June 12, 1999, Cox and Arquette said "I do" at historic Grace Cathedral atop Nob Hill in San Francisco, with celebs such as Jennifer Aniston and Brad Pitt, Kevin Spacey, Nicolas Cage, and Paul Reubens (a.k.a. Pee-Wee Herman) in attendance. Their honeymoon included stops at a tennis camp, a beach in the Caribbean, Busch Gardens, Disney World, and Islands of Adventure, where, as Arquette stated, they "rode all these amazing roller-coasters."
Their Offspring: Though the rumor mill has been churning since they wed, there are no little feet running around yet. But with this season reportedly being the last for Friends, the pitter-patter may soon be on its way.
What They Have to Say: On family, Arquette claims: "We're gonna have so much fun. We love our dog so much, so we can only imagine how much we'll love our kids."
