The best way to assess the ripeness of the cervix is to have an experienced person check it. I tried to check mine when I was due but it is very hard, especially with a belly in front.

As the cervix ripens, it becomes easier to reach (moves from posterior to anterior) so that is one thing you can feel for.

Contractions ripen the cervix, so anything which induces contractions will work to some degree.

Prostaglandin gel is one way that this is accomplished in the hospital. At home, inducing contractions is not a wise idea but there is some research being done on acupuncture which has much promise.
