Known for their daring design pairings of high-end modern and flea-market finds, it’s no surprise Cortney and Robert Novogratz, stars of HGTV’s Home by Novogratz, also got creative with naming their kids. With seven -- yes, we said seven -- children, including two sets of twins, they had plenty of opportunities to make a statement. Novogratz Naming 101 Over the last 14 years of child-naming, many monikers have made the Novogratz’s list of possibilities, including Otto, Clementine, and Clemente (as in the painter Francesco). “Because Robert and I have similar taste, we never had any disagreements about names,” Cortney said. “But we definitely talked it over and had lots of names in the running.”
Cortney and Robert avoided learning the gender of the baby in advance and waited until they had seen each child before deciding on a final name. The only traditional naming convention they chose was using a family name as each child’s middle name. They also just went with what felt right: “My mother suggested the name Charlotte once, because Robert and I met in Charlotte, N.C. I think the name Charlotte is beautiful -- but it's not for us.” Here’s a peek inside the Novogratz name game and what inspired each child’s distinctive signature.
