Breath work is the fastest way to lower stress. I recommend taking 10 slow, deep breaths when stress levels are high. You will usually notice an immediate calming effect, which is due to a decrease in your heart rate and blood pressure. Studies have shown that doing this type of breathing several times a day over a period of two to three weeks can lead to significant improvement in overall feelings of well-being. Other options to lower stress levels quickly include exercising for five to 15 minutes (a quick walk around the block, lifting hand weights, practicing a few yoga moves, for instance) or doing a five- to 10-minute imagery or meditation exercise.
