How to do the Twist

Ages: 3-5, 6-8
Location: Indoors, Outdoors
Skills: Physical, Social

What you'll need:
Motown music from the 1960s

Background:
Dancing is not just great physical exercise -- it's also a good social skill builder. Teach your kids the twist and they'll have fun moving their bodies without even knowing that you're reinforcing social skills.

What to do:
Choose some old twist recordings to introduce the children to the rage of the 1960s. Demonstrate the twist as the music plays. Encourage the children to dance along with you. Add new movements as the children seem ready for them. For example, you could:

Twist with your hands in the air.
Twist with your body leaning forward.
Twist with your body leaning back.
Twist with one leg off the ground.
Twist and turn around.
Twist and move up and down.

Ask the children to help you think of new variations for the twist.
