In honor of the adorable Ralph Lauren Polo Pups Twitter Giveaway going on at Petside.com this week, Wendy Toth, Petside editor and freelance stylist for iVillage, has agreed to a guest blog post tailored to the pet-loving fashionista.
All style-conscious citizens lend a critical eye to others: your friend going on a first date, your sister for the next family wedding, your boyfriend before a barbecue… but when you're out of friends to dress, that eye inevitably wanders over to your unsuspecting pet.
She is a reflection of you, after all. And she could use at least a few wardrobe staples.
To cut down on your risk of escalating from slightly indulgent pet parent to full-on Paris Hilton, I've got a simple, 3-step plan:
1. Stay pretty practical.
What might make your honey more comfortable? A jacket for winter, some booties for hot-sidewalk-days?
2. All frocks in moderation.
So you got her a fleece-lined raincoat. We know she looks cute and all, but - It’s. Not. Raining.
3. Do a taste test.
Once you and your pooch graduate from utilitarian outfits -- whether you're a frill seeker or a sports fanatic -- only dress your pet in pieces that you love too.
Personally, I'm going for a crisp look this summer. So over at Petside we thought a partnership with Polo Ralph Lauren and Polo Pups would be the perfect pet fashion cross over.
If you follow us on Twitter and then tweet about spoiling you pet with #dogswps, you could win a classic polo for you, and one for your pup!
Which reminds me. I've added a 4th step:
Keep the matching to a minimum.
You can't go wrong with a classic polo, and neither can your pup. But if you win, try not to wear them at the same time, all the time. Just for walks, the dog park, and maybe the occasional trip to the groomer.
Do you dress your pet? If so, in what? Chime in below!
