Makeup That Matches: How to get custom-blended makeup

How to get custom-blended makeup

Wouldn't it be the greatest luxury to have makeup prepared exclusively for your individual needs and specifications? That's what custom makeup's all about. Whether you want to duplicate an existing color, tweak what you already have, replace one that's been discontinued or create something completely original, it's possible with custom blending. The process begins with a skin-tone analysis, after which precise hues are selected, measured and mixed to create specially made color. Here are thee custom blended lines we love and what they offer.

Prescriptives Custom Makeup Collection:

An extension of their ready-to-wear cosmetics, Prescriptives offers what they call their "haute couture" line, in which the client is "colorprinted" to classify skin tones into one of four categories: yellow/orange, red/orange, red, or blue/red, after which hues are hand-mixed to create personalized shades. Customers have the choice of a matte, glossy, sheer and shimmery finishes.
Price: Consultation is free and cosmetics range from $45 to $80
Available: Select department stores and Prescriptives.com

Giella Color Complete Products:

Giella, whom you can personally arrange an appointment with, believes in measuring the depth and intensity of skin, eyes and hair, and it's her philosophy that you can wear any color as long as the depth (the color's position in relation to light and dark) and intensity (the brightness) are considered. Her products are made with a form of quartz that allows light to reflect so as to diffuse tiny lines and allow pores to appear smaller. And she even custom blends nail polish!
Price: Product blending for purchase is free, private consultations range from $50 to $100 and products range from $15 to $52
Available: Henri Bendel, other specialized locations and Gielaa.com

Three Custom Color Specialists:

Three Custom Colors offers the most intimate consultation of the three. Located in a private studio in the Tribeca neighborhood of New York City, you can arrange an hour- long appointment in which to discuss your personal makeup wishes. The makeup you order is then blended for you in their onsite color lab. These custom color experts formulate makeup based on whether you have greenish, pinkish, bluish or golden undertones. If you want, they will create an entire palette of shades that include colors to subtly highlight or dramatize your look. One of their most popular services is the "makeup-bag makeover," where you bring your old makeup bag in for a re-do.

Price: One-hour consultation with Trae Bodge or Chad Hayduk is $105. You pay $65 with any other consultant. Cosmetics cost $19.50 up.
