How to Grow Seeds

Ages: 6-8
Location: Outdoors
Skills: Science

What you'll need:
Thin board of wood
2 cement blocks or 4 bricks
Lima-bean seeds
Baby-food jars
Pen
Spiral notebook

Background:
Put your junior scientist to work with this seed-growing experiment.

What to do:
Create a variety of soil combinations, a different one for each jar.

For example:
sand and dirt
rock and sand
rock, sand and dirt

Label each jar with the marking pen. Plant a lima-bean seed in each jar and water. Record the different types of environments in the notebook by making a chart. Ask children to make a prediction about which bean they think will grow best. Record the prediction in the notebook. Place the jars on the laboratory bench and water them daily, checking the jars and recording the findings each day.
