Royal Babies? How Long Should William and Kate Wait Before Having Kids?

We're thrilled about Prince William and Kate Middleton’s recent engagement. And we know we’re totally jumping the gun by even mentioning this, but we can’t help thinking about the adorable royal babies they'll probably have.

But how long will they wait? If history is any indication, it could be a while. Prince William waited eight years to propose to Kate, so he might take his time before starting a family, too. And they were vacationing in Kenya when he proposed, so we know they love to travel -- something harder to do with kiddos in tow.

But enough speculation -- we talked to an expert to tell us how long couples should wait to have children after marriage. (For the record: I waited a whopping two months to get pregnant!)

“Preferably wait two years before having kids, to bond in special ways that can only come when there are just the two of you,” says Noelle C. Nelson, Ph.D., a licensed clinical psychologist and author of Your Man is Wonderful and eight other books. “In this case, it doesn’t matter if the royal couple has nannies. The child takes priority.” And what if you haven't waited? Well, we think that's okay. The important thing is not to lose focus of your marriage. So be sure you're making an effort to stay close with your guy -- go ahead and start planning that date night!
