How to Make Bottle Cap Garland

Ages: 9-12
Location: Indoors
Skills: Art, Social

What you'll need:
Bottle caps (it takes about 60 to make a foot of garland)
Picture hanging wire (lighter is best, e.g. #2 wire for pictures up to 20 lbs)
A block of thick wood
A big nail (2 1/2 in. nail with a large head is good)
A hammer

Background:
You can make a holiday decoration for your tree that demonstrates your commitment to recycling. And with your supervision, kids will enjoy hammering the bottle caps.

What to do:
Put each bottle cap onto the block of wood. Center the nail over the bottle cap and bang a hole through the bottle cap using the nail and hammer. Then string the bottle caps onto the picture wire (remember to knot one end). When your bottle cap garland is long enough, knot both ends of the garland and hang it on a tree for the holidays. It can get kind of heavy, so make sure to arrange it on sturdy branches. Also, note how it jingles when you shake it, sort of like sleigh bells!
