What you’ll need:
- 1 box yellow cake mix
- 8- or 9-inch round cake pans
- 1 candy stick (8-10 inches long)
- food coloring (pick your kid’s favorite colors)
- Cake decorating gel
- Assorted sprinkles and/or colored sugar
- 1 package of jelly beans
How to make it:
1. Bake the cake in two 8- or 9-inch pans as directed on the box. Freeze one for later use; you won’t need it for this cake. (Or just halve the cake mix recipe and use the rest of the mix later.)
2. Cut the cake in half crosswise. Then, cut the halves into 1/3 and 2/3 pieces as shown here. Place the pieces together to form the butterfly.
3. Frost the cake with half the frosting. Place the candy stick between the wings for the butterfly’s body.
4. Stir the remaining food coloring into the frosting and spread it as desired to make a wing pattern. Use sprinkles, jelly beans and/or colored sugar to enhance your design.
