How to play the Cotton-Ball Race

Ages: 6-8
Location: Outdoors
Skill: Physical, Social/Emotional

What you'll need:
4 coffee cans
Bag of cotton balls
2 spoons

Background:
This tricky race uses small-motor skills by challenging children to balance a cotton ball on a spoon and walk with it.

Setting up:
Divide the cotton balls between two of the four coffee cans. Place the filled cans a short distance apart, 6 to 10 feet away from the empty coffee cans. Divide the children into two teams and have each team stand behind a coffee can filled with cotton balls.

What to do:
Give the first child in each line a spoon. On your signal, have the two children with spoons use their spoons to each get a cotton ball from a can and walk it to an empty can. If the cotton ball falls off the spoon, the child must return to the can to get another cotton ball. When the child reaches the empty can, he or she should drop the cotton ball in. Then the child should run back to the next child on the team and hand over the spoon. Each child in each line should follow the same procedure until one line has completed the sequence and won the race.

To make the more challenging for older children, have them carry the spoon in their nondominant hand.
