How to Play the Suitcase Relay Race

Aching for a vacation? When you can't get out of town, here's an exciting way to make use of those dusty suitcases. Whether it's at a birthday party or a family reunion, this suitcase relay race provides lots of laughs for everyone.

By having kids (and adults, if they dare) dress and undress themselves, you're reinforcing small-motor skills while they're having too good a time to notice.

Ages: 6-8, 9-12
Location: Outdoors
Skill: Physical

What you'll need:
2 hats
2 pairs of adult-size pants
2 pairs of adult-size shoes
2 suitcases

What you'll do:
Before playing the game, collect two sets of clothes: a hat, pants and adult-size shoes. Place each set in a separate suitcase.

Form two relay teams. Then divide each team into two smaller subgroups. Stand the two subgroups from each team a short distance apart, facing each other.

Place a suitcase of clothes in front of the first child in a subgroup from each team. On your signal, have the child open the suitcase and start to put on all the clothes, being sure to tie the shoes and button any buttons.

When the child is dressed, have him or her close the suitcase and run the short distance to the first child in the other subgroup. Once there, the child should remove the clothes and replace them in the suitcase. The child who is waiting then repeats the whole procedure, getting dressed and running across to the next child in line. Continue until all the members of one team have dressed and undressed themselves, winning the game.

Add items such as socks, wigs and gloves to make it more challenging for older children.
