Pull Off Scarlett Johansson's New Messy Bob

Hairstylist Oribe, who's responsible for ScarJo's new 'do, dishes how to get the look

What do you think of Scarlett Johansson's new messy bob? Although we loved the actress' long, luscious locks, we are also diggin' her new haircut. It's still pretty, but has a bit of an edge -- perfect for the upcoming fall season. (Are we thinking about fall already?!) We caught up with the man behind the new 'do -- Oribe, the Cuban stylist who has been dubbed the "hair maestro" -- to get all of the deets!

"When we did this, we cut Scarlett’s hair twice. The first time was for a job (when Scarlett had a [Bridget] Bardot style). We took 5 to 6 inches off the front," he explains. "The second cut was for Scarlett's summer look, and we wanted more volume but in a lighter style. We kept all the good qualities about the first cut, and we took length off the bottom to modernize the style."

Love the look but don't know if you can pull it off? Check out Oribe's advice:

About the Cut and What to Tell Your Hairdresser
This haircut has a lot of versatility. It's a very modern, medium-length to longer bob, cut in a really jagged line at the bottom. Tell your hairdresser to keep the "good parts" of your longer hair -- the softer ends -- and take length off the back. The cut isn't super-angled, and it isn't incredibly severe. It isn't tapered like crazy in the back; it is softer and more wearable. It doesn't take a certain type of face shape to pull it off.

In terms of length, the style should be closer to the collarbone in front, not at chin level. The hair should be left long enough to put up.

Who Can Pull Off the Style
The good news: it can look good on everybody. This haircut isn't so drastic -- it's very soft in a way. A medium-length bob like this can be turned into lots of different styles

A sharper bob can work on both curly and wavy hair textures, as well as fine, straighter hair. If you have a more natural wave, make the cut less jagged so you can keep the line very strong. You can tailor the layering to work with your texture to keep it feeling fresh.

How to Style the Cut
There are a million directions you can take with this haircut. It's not your typical bob. Keep the cut below the chin for more versatility. Scarlett's hair was photographed in more of a natural state, but you can do so much with this style.

Use the Oribe Gel Serum if you want a straighter blowout, or the Oribe Soft Lacquer Heat Styling Spray if you want to curl the hair with maximum shine for a more retro style. You can also try a dry texturizing spray if you want extra texture and lift at the roots.
