When Britney Spears signed on for The X Factor in 2012, it was the ultimate diva trump card. It didn't matter that American Idol had Jennifer Lopez and The Voice had Christina Aguilera; this was Britney, bitch!
Unfortunately, Spears failed to live up to sky-high expectations, and after learning that her $15 million contract wouldn't be renewed, she stepped away from the judge's table. Now there's an empty chair next to Demi Lovato -- a situation that producer Simon Cowell needs to fix. But who could possibly fill Britney's thigh-high go-go boots? Even Lovato is at a loss. "Who can replace Britney, let's be honest," the singer told E! Online on Wednesday.
We're not sure that anyone could match the hype that Spears brought to the table. Still, the problem wasn't that people disliked her; it was that she just wasn't opinionated enough to hold the audience's interest. A good judge's table needs big personalities who know their stuff and can stand by their opinions. Lovato has done a nice job holding her own, and we hope she sticks around. Here are three people we'd be happy to see up there with her.
Adele - The "Skyfall" singer seems really sweet, so it's possible she'd fall into the same too-nice trap as Britney (and J-Lo, and Steven Tyler, and Ellen DeGeneres when they appeared on Idol). But Adele also seems like a bit of a perfectionist, she's definitely not afraid to speak her mind, and she has that all-important, larger-than-life personality. She's also one of the best vocalists in the game, which is the kind of cred that X Factor could use.
Kanye West - We know, this would never happen in a million years. Think about it, though: Who's more opinionated about the music world (or the fashion world, or the media) than Kanye? This is the man who once launched into a Twitter rant because he was offended by a striped scarf. How much more entertaining would it be to watch his outbursts happen live?
Lady Gaga - This is the only person who could possibly rival the Britney hype. (Except maybe Beyonce.) Like Adele, we can definitely see her erring on the side of too-nice; on the other hand, she's pretty quick with a comeback when she's provoked. Plus, we'd look forward to her outfits every single week.
