Two days after he was supposed to marry Crystal Harris, consummate bachelor Hugh Hefner is back to enjoying the single life. Hefner, 85, has been surrounding himself with friends and family -- not to mention Playmates! -- since being dumped unexpectedly by fiancée Harris, 25. Now, having had a week to reflect, the Playboy publisher seems grateful that things worked out the way they did.
"After all is said & done, staying single is probably for the best," Hefner tweeted to a follower on Monday. "I think I just missed a bullet."
The "bullet" comment sounds like a riff on something that ex-girlfriend Holly Madison tweeted the day Hugh announced his broken engagement: "Where does one find the 'Dodged a Bullet' mylar balloons?" (Well, it did always seem like he was more in sync with Holly than with Crystal!)
Rumor has it that Hefner has already moved a new girlfriend into his mansion: Harris's best friend, Miss January 2011 Anna Sophia Berglund. And while that may sound like excellent revenge, Hefner writes that he's not being "vindictive"; Berglund, he says, has been his "best friend" through the crisis.
"Anna is Crystal's best friend and mine as well," Hefner explained on Twitter. "She's the one who helped me survive this past week. She's the best."
If Hefner were indeed dating Berglund (and, let's face it, he might be), it probably wouldn't come as a shock to Harris. His ex-fiancé admitted to Entertainment Tonight that she "was not the only woman in Hef's life," which is one reason she ultimately became uncomfortable with the idea of marrying him.
Still, Hefner claims that he and Harris "remain close friends." The "runaway bride" even stopped by the Playboy Mansion this weekend to visit Hef, where she attempted to return her $90,000 engagement ring. Surprisingly, Hefner insisted that she keep the three-carat diamond -- along with the Bentley he had given her!
Harris may have walked away with the ring and the car, but she did give back the one thing Hefner really wanted: his dog Charlie. It looks like the break-up is for real -- but if diamonds are a girl's best friend and dogs are man's best friend, then both Crystal and Hugh are now in excellent company.
