It's time to get excited, Hunger Games fans! First, Lionsgate released new photos of Jennifer Lawrence as Katniss Everdeen and Josh Hutcherson as Peeta Mellark. Then, the studio announced the release date for Catching Fire, the trilogy's second installment, is scheduled for Nov. 22, 2013.
The newest photos from director Gary Ross' adaptation of Suzanne Collins' dystopian young-adult thriller are close-up shots of the series' two lead characters. Lawrence, 20, plays 16-year-old protagonist Katniss Everdeen, an expert archer shown slightly injured. Those who've read the best-selling series will recognize her uniform as placing her in the Arena of the titular Games, where she and 23 other adolescent contestants must fight to the death.
Hutcherson, 18, is Peeta Mellark, who looks even worse off, with a series of bloody cuts and bruises on his face. Although they are technically adversaries (there can only be one victor), Katniss and Peeta are from the same "District" and share a complicated history that develops into one of the story's two romantic pairings.
Katniss' other possible love interest is her slightly older best friend and hunting partner Gale, played by 21-year-old Aussie hunk Liam Hemsworth. Entertainment Weekly revealed the first photos of Gale and Peeta just two weeks ago.
With the first movie's March 23 release date just six-and-a-half months away, fans are buzzing with anticipation for anything related to the film. Perhaps next the studio will treat fans to a photo of Katniss and Peeta together!
