As we’ve seen before, it’s the parents leading their children into unhealthy habits; in this case, it’s David Sr. taking prediabetic 9-year-old David Jr. on late night RV donut runs. At least David Sr. was awake and breathing, because his sleep apnea stops his breathing up to 32 seconds at a time during the night. What’s even worse is that his pride keeps him from wearing a breathing machine, and the entire family worries that their dad won’t wake up the next morning. When mom, Carmen, tries to get them the family to shape up, they call her a nag. It seems the only time they are all happy is when they are gathered around a toxic meal of fried, syrupy, oil-filled, high sodium and lard-based meal. Leave it to Jillian to change their toxic dynamic. Florida has seen it’s share of gulf storms, but those are nothing compared to hurricane Jillian.
This episode didn’t start with a family workout as usual because big David needed to get cleared by a doctor for exercise via sleep apnea test. Unfortunately for Jillian and even more so for David, the doctor advised that he had to keep a low heart rate. Jillian was forced to direct her energy on breaking through to Carmen. And as usual, Jillian used a tough workout that involved Carmen dragging her across the gym floor yelling that she would make a change.
Up next was little David, who wasn’t so little. It seemed like Jillian saw a little bit of her young self in David, who she took to karate -- the activity that inspired little Jillian to get healthy. A gushing and proud big David and little David were grinning ear-to-ear for little David’s progress on the floor. He loved it. Little David was turning 10 the next day, and for his birthday, Jillian dragged the family to the local farmer’s market. Even though the family lived a 20-minute walk away, it had been years since they’d gone there. The market inspired Carmen to cook a healthy and grease-free meal for her son’s birthday party. That wasn’t his only surprise, as Jillian gave him a huge box full of all the karate gear he’d need to stay motivated.
The last family work-out was very symbolic. The family had to work together pulling the weight of David Sr. across the beach in a boat. David Jr. kept saying, "I can't," but with encouragement, they got their dad to the end of the beach. Yet again, Jillian took a can’t family and turned them to a can. After six weeks, David Sr. was down 54 pounds and no longer needed blood pressure medication, Carmen was four dress sizes smaller and 25 pounds lighter and a completely new David Jr. looked remarkably different at 25 pounds lighter. Committed to staying active and healthy, little David started an after school exercise program at his school with monetary help from Jillian. He also said he pointed out all the grease and fat in the food the lunch ladies were serving. It sounds like Jillian created a mini-me to carry on her work in Florida.
