I Did It: Brazilian Bikini Wax

One woman's take on getting a brazilian bikini wax for the first time

Name: Gwynn
Age: 32

Cost: $50

Where it was done: J Sisters, New York, NY

Describe the procedure: This is one of those beauty procedures that is not for the modest! First things first: You have to get naked. Yup, completely naked. You then lay down on your back and spread your legs with the bottoms of your feet touching each other. At my appointment, the waxer asked what shape I wanted, and when I stumbled a bit on describing it, she brought out a sheet of basic shapes from which to choose: triangle, square, rectangle, heart, etc. I opted for the rectangular shape (more commonly referred to as the "landing strip"). She rubbed baby powder over the area to be waxed and began her meticulous waxing and tweezing. Using a tongue-depressor-type stick, wax was applied to the areas where she would be removing hair. Strips of muslin-like material were placed over the wax. Then, a little rub back and forth on the strip to ensure that the wax was sticking to it and a very fast removal of the strip with the hair attached. Think of a Band-Aid being removed in a quick motion and you've got the idea. After she was satisfied she got everything, she trimmed what pubic hair I had left and then rubbed a sea-breeze-like toner everywhere and followed with a cream designed to moisturize and protect the skin as well as prevent ingrown hairs.

How long did it take? About 15 to 20 minutes.

Any pain? (Rate on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being the worst pain.) 6. I have to say I've had bikini waxes in the past and the pain here wasn't nearly as bad. I think it's because she was so quick and obviously knew what she was doing. Instead of slathering on a ton of wax and pulling away big strips of hair at once, she worked in smaller sections.

One thing I've noticed in my years of waxing and talking to girlfriends is that the tighter your skin is, the less pain you'll experience. If you're flabby, overweight or just have skin that moves around a lot, you'll feel more pain when they pull off the strips. Often a waxer might ask you to hold your skin taut to lessen this, which helps.

Did anything during or after the procedure surprise you? The big shocker came when she asked me to lift my legs into the air and bring my knees to my ears so she could remove the hair around my booty. I didn't even know there was hair there! It was quick and painless since there really isn't a whole lot back there anyway.

How embarrassing was it? (Where applicable, i.e., for bikini wax. Rate on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 being so embarrassing you'll never do it again.) 6. I'm a bit of a spa lover, so I've been in the buff in front of strangers more often than I can count -- but this proved to be a little embarrassing. Okay, very embarrassing. Not only are you naked, legs spread open, but you are being touched everywhere: labia, etc. After the initial shock and my reminding myself that she does this all day, every day, and has probably seen worse, I was able to relax. But this is not a procedure for the easily embarrassed or someone uncomfortable with her privates being viewed at very close range and touched by someone other than a significant other.

How happy are you with the results? (Rate on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 meaning your results are even better than you expected.) 10. Very, very happy! The results lasted over a month, and the process was not as scary or as painful as I had been expecting.

What did you like most about the results of the procedure? I liked how soft and smooth my skin felt, and I really liked the way it looked. It made me feel very sexy.

What did you like least about the results of the procedure? The waxed area is a little sore and tender afterwards. This only lasts a few hours, but I've since noticed that I prefer to wait 24 hours after bikini waxing before being intimate. The friction of such an activity so soon after waxing irritated my skin. Also, I avoid having this done when I'm close to getting my period. I've found my skin is much more sensitive during that time of the month.

What was the feedback from your husband/boyfriend, family or friends? He loved it! But one time I waxed the entire area and neither one of us liked that as much.

Would you do it again? Absolutely! I have a standing appointment now.

Overall, how would you rate this experience? (Rate on a scale of 1 to 10, with 10 meaning you would recommend it to friends and you'd do it again.) 10. I've already recommended the esthetician who did my waxing to all my friends.
