Kids Can Have High Cholesterol?

A growing number of kids are developing high cholesterol, high trigylcerides and type 2 diabetes -- all risk factors for heart disease. But a recent Australian study says that lifestyle changes made before adulthood, such as regular exercise and weight control, are likely to reduce the risk for heart disease later in life. “The risk factors for heart disease start early,” says W. Robert Morrow, M.D., medical director of University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences College of Medicine in Little Rock. “Helping kids make lifestyle changes now prepares them to make better choices as adults.” Here’s how to build heart-healthy habits for life.
