Induction: Offer Is Tempting
I am 39 weeks pregnant and am going crazy with waiting for this baby! It is my second. With my first, I was induced because they were concerned that the baby was getting too big to deliver vaginally. I never went into labor, or even dilated at all, even though I went past my due date a few days. This time, my doctors are again suggesting that I consider induction, even though there is not a medical reason for it. Since I am incredibly impatient, it is tempting (even though it was a horrible experience last time). What do you think?Question:
I can really understand your impatience and desire to have this baby. But I think you will be happy if you wait for labor to begin on its own.
It will be wonderful to labor without IVs, continuous monitoring (if your provider allows this) and to be able to walk and move around in bed more easily.
Imagine yourself starting labor at home, quietly with only your family around you and deciding together if it's time to go in to the hospital.
Then picture the alternative. Labor started with medication that can cause hard contractions from the start, necessitating the use of pain medication. Your blood pressure will be checked every 15 minutes . You'll have all the medical bells and whistles involved in an induction. This scene is fine if you really need it, but if all is well, it is so much better for you and your baby to wait until labor begins on its own. Your baby gets to choose his or her birthday. I would hold out and have faith in your body to do this on its own.
If you do decide to take advantage of this very tempting offer, don't feel that you have failed in any way. In the end, you will do whatever you feel is right for yourself, your baby and your family.
I wish you a peaceful birth this time.Answer:
