Inside the Celebrity Look-Alike Sperm Bank

Everyone wants a cute baby, but unless you're Jennifer Garner, you don't have Ben Affleck's genetic material on your side. So, how about the next-best thing?

Last night's Nightline explored the California Cryobank, a sperm bank that specializes in celebrity look-alike donors. The facility claims to be extremely picky, accepting only 1% of applicants, who are filed according to which celebrities' features they resemble. Wannabe moms can then assemble their perfect baby from a list of celebrity resemblances. (They, and you, can check out the full list here.)

According to communications director Scott Brown, California Cryobank's most popular requests include Paul Walker and Ben Affleck, along with athletes Brett Favre and Jeremy Shockey. The Web site boasts a wide range of male celebs, including musicians (Harry Belafonte, Branford Marsalis), leading men (Toby Macguire, James Spader, Viggo Mortenson), athletes (Manny Ramirez, Cal Ripken Jr.), comedians (Adam Sandler, Cedric the Entertainer), and reality stars (Jon Gosselin. Yes, really). The donor list also contains a baffling number of 80s TV stars, like Full House's Dave Coulier, Saved by the Bell's Mark-Paul Gosselaar and Family Ties's Jaleel White.

Tempting as it might be to have an Urkel baby, most women will probably lean more in the direction of Harrison Ford. Of course, there are big ethical questions raised by choosing a donor based on looks (rather than talent or personality, for example). But as bioethicist Daniel Sulmasy points out, it might not even work: "Maybe the child is supposed to look like Harrison Ford, and if they come out not looking as someone quite as handsome as Harrison Ford, what does that do to the relationship between the parent and the child?"

One mother profiled in the Dateline piece has selected a donor who has "a combination of Oscar de la Hoya's complexion, David Cassidy's nose, and the lips and eyes of Freddie Prinze Jr." But she says that she's considering swapping in a Joey Lawrence lookalike, since "he was my crush since Blossom days." Know someone who looks like Joey Lawrence? The bank is accepting applicants here, and claims that earnings can be up to $1200 a month.

Do you think parents should be able to make "designer" babies?
