Why Ireland Baldwin Challenged the Haters -- and Totally Won Us Over

The 17-year-old model wrote a Tumblr post questioning critics' hateful comments about her weight and famous parents

Ireland Baldwin is as beautiful as her mother Kim Basinger, and as outspoken as her father Alec Baldwin! After the 17-year-old model did a swimwear shoot for The New York Post, she was met with the predictable outpouring of dumb and hurtful Internet comments. Instead of ignoring her critics, Ireland decided to address them with an open letter on Tumblr.

"I get many hateful emails, Twitter replies, and comments on gossip websites about me and my parents," she writes. "I know what most of you are thinking, 'Ireland, just ignore it.' 'There are always going to be haters out there.' 'Quit being so sensitive.' Yes, you are all correct. Someone out there is always going to have terrible things to say about you, no matter how good of a person you truly are!"

Guess you learn that lesson early when your parents are in the spotlight. Ireland goes on to explain that she's received a ton of criticism for being "too fat to model," "an unattractive girl," and "too tall."

Okay, obviously, these criticisms are ridiculous -- she's objectively not fat, and is it even possible to be too tall to model? It's the same sexist bile that gets directed at every single woman in the public eye, except that in this case, it's directed at a teenage girl.

Fortunately, Ireland recognizes how messed up this reaction is, asking, "what is the good in commenting on a photo of a 17 year old girl and calling her fat, ugly, etc? Is that helping you in some way?" And yet she goes on to defend herself and her choice of career, even apologizing for being a rookie.

"I am still trying to figure this whole thing out," she says of modeling. "How to work my angles…how to smile without looking like I am posing for my 3rd grade yearbook photo…how to iron my clothing before a red carpet event…how to walk without falling. I am still learning."

That yearbook photo comment kinda makes us love her. Still, it's sad that she feels the need to justify her life choices to a bunch of anonymous strangers. Even sadder: She feels the need to defend her parents. Particularly her actor father and his legendary temper.

"I get hateful replies and threats regarding mistakes of my Dad’s past. This isn’t fair. I had nothing to do with anything that happened back then, so I don’t fully understand why I am being targeted," Ireland writes. "More importantly, my Dad has moved on. He recognized that he needed to change, so he made changes. He is now healthy, happily married with a baby on the way. He moved on, so why can’t you?"

She continues: "I am proud to be my parent’s daughter, but I don’t want to forever be known as 'that rude thoughtless little pig' or 'Alec Baldwin and Kim Basinger’s kid.' I have passions and interests of my own that I want to soon give life to. I want to be known for helping others and being a healthy role model. That is what matters most to me overall."

Did anyone else's jaw drop at that reference to Alec Baldwin's infamous "thoughtless little pig" voicemail? How awful that Ireland not only had to be on the receiving end of that rant, but she has to be constantly reminded of it by the media. No wonder she's on the defensive.

We're not sure that this Tumblr post will have any effect on Ireland's haters, but we do think it will win her some fans. She comes off as sweet, smart, and hard-working. Most importantly, she's defining herself in her own words, rather than letting the press (or her parents) do it for her. Now we know that Ireland has a mind of her own, and we're guessing, a pretty bright future.
