It’s a common dilemma: Do I buy a baby his own seat on the plane, or not? Some moms would rather pay the extra money and have peace of mind that baby would be strapped into her car seat in a crash landing. Others say the small risk just isn’t worth the expense.
The debate came into the forefront last week at a forum where the National Transportation Safety Board (NTSB) discussed their recommendation that babies under 2, who aren’t legally required to have their own seats, should not ride on mom’s lap. They cited specific cases where kids lives were saved because they had their own seats -- and ones who were injured or died because they didn’t.
Is this scaring you, mama? The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA), who got the official report with details from the NTSB this summer, says that while they know it’s safer for kids to have their own seats, they aren’t changing the laws. They say parents who would not be able to afford extra seats for their babies would instead drive -- and car travel is way less safe than air travel.
What do you think -- is holding baby on your lap worth the risk? Chime in below!
