This dish is a tasty, spicy quick to prepare dish. The savory Italian sausage combines with the cheese to create a wonderful stuffed bread.
| 1 loaf (approximately 12 ounces) French bread | 0.5 t cayenne | |
| 1 lb bulk Italian sausage | 1.25 c shredded cheddar cheese, divided | |
| 6 green onions, thinly sliced | 2 T butter | |
| 1 t salt | 4 eggs | |
| 1 t pepper | 0.5 c milk |
Cut one inch of each end off the French bread. Then slice the remaining bread into six slices, approximately 1 ½ inches thick. Turn each of the six slices on its side and cut a three- inch pocket in each; set aside until ready to use.
Place the ends of the bread in a food processer and process to make crumbs.
In a large (12 inch) cast iron skillet over medium high heat, brown the sausage with five of the sliced green onions, and ½ each of the salt, pepper, and cayenne. When browned stir in the reserved bread crumbs and one cup shredded cheddar cheese.
Remove the skillet from the heat. Divide and spoon the sausage mixture into each pocket of the French bread slices. Wipe the skillet clean, return to medium heat, and add the butter.
In shallow bowl, whisk together the eggs, milk, and remaining salt, pepper and cayenne. Dip both sides of each Italian Sausage and Cheese Stuffed bread slices in the egg mixture and add to the skillet of melted butter
Cook the Italian Sausage and Cheese Stuffed bread for three minutes per side and the bread is lightly browned.
Arrange the Italian Sausage and Cheese Stuffed French Toast on a serving platter and sprinkle with the remaining cheese and green onions
