Dealing With a Medical Emergency on the Road? There's an App for That

Stomach viruses and sprains are bad enough when you’re on your own turf, but when you’re hundreds of miles from your pediatrician and corner drugstore, even the tiniest pain can become a huge headache. So how do you get peace of mind when you’re heading out on spring break? As a mom who once spent 24 harrowing hours nursing her daughter through a virus in a foreign hotel room, I’m happy to report that there’s an app for that.

iTriage is a free app that gives you clear, concise info on potential causes and treatments for any symptoms you may have, from abdominal distention to yellow skin. If you need outside help solving your medical issue, iTriage uses iPhone’s GPS to help you track down the closest drugstore, doctor and ER, and gives you turn-by-turn directions to help you get there. You can even access ER wait times -- key information when you’re facing a medical emergency in unfamiliar territory.

Last month’s updates to iTriage included adding a whole slew of new diseases and the latest treatments -- and offering a brief introductory tour to help you get a sense of how the app works. Check it out before you go -- although we hope you don’t have to use it!
