You might know that diabetes can cause several eye diseases, but did you know that vision problems are sometimes the first indication of diabetes a person notices?

Blurred vision is the most common visual symptom of undiagnosed diabetes. "The lens swells and changes shape, and people are out of focus," Dr. Hellman says.

Sometimes people can develop diabetic eye diseases even if they haven't yet been diagnosed with diabetes. They may have diabetic retinopathy, which causes abnormal and leaky blood vessels in the back of the eye. This can cause dark streaks, blank areas in the field of vision or other problems. Diabetes can also contribute to cataracts, which cloud eyesight, and glaucoma, which destroys side vision, usually so slowly it goes ignored.

Regular eye exams can catch such problems. These painless tests are an important part of your health care.
