A student of mine was having difficulty staying awake after lunch each day. When I spoke with his mother, she explained that he was staying awake until 10pm most nights doing his homework. I was immediately concerned that perhaps the work was too challenging or that I had asked him to do an unreasonable amount of homework. She replied that it took him twenty minutes or so to complete the assignments, but he always started after 9pm because that was when things settled down in their house.
Families are busy. There are lessons and classes to attend, chores to do, homework to complete, and limited hours in each day to accomplish everything. Establishing a schedule is the best way to make the most of an individual's time, and this method can certainly be utilized to bring some sanity to hectic homes. Creating and maintaining routines can be one of the most important things you can do for your child and your family, particularly during the school year.
Before the bell rings on the first day of school, your child can benefit from a bedtime routine. Ten days before school starts, enact a school night bedtime for your child. This will give your child the opportunity to transition from the later summer nights before school actually begins. Although it is not always an attractive proposition for night owls, it is also a good idea to practice the school day wakeup call during that week or two before school starts. Your child will feel more rested the first week of school if the routine has been in practice for some time. Children who have difficulty rising early will particularly profit from this practice.
