Hi there, iVillage folks!
I was asked to do a monthly blog for this site and this is my first one. I am an actress on NBC's The Office. I play that super stuffy lady who sits in accounting. We've all worked with versions of her. When I asked what I should write for this blog the answer I got back was to tell little stories from my life. I am not sure if this will be interesting to anyone but here goes...
My mom Bertie and dad Bill are coming out to visit me this month and I am so excited. They live in small-town Texas. I think about 1,900 people live there now. Its main intersection is a four-way stop with a flashing light. The big place to eat is the Dairy Queen and Friday night high-school football is the hottest ticket in town. My mom is one of those lovely Southern gals who does full hair and makeup before she goes to the mall. My dad's favorite outfit is a pair of overalls that he has cut at the knee. What do you call those? Overshorts? They are awesome folks and totally unimpressed with the Hollywood life.

As soon as my mom gets here she will start cooking for us and my dad will find several projects around the house. He usually yells something like, "This is loose!" And then I hear a drilling sound. He finds tools in my garage that I didn't even know I had. They love to come visit me and my daughter Isabel, but this trip has a dual purpose: I asked one of them to be my date to this year's Emmys.
I only get one guest ticket so they said they would flip for it. My dad was the winner. He called me and asked me if he had to buy a new suit. I said 'no.' I could hear my mom yell from the background, "You can NOT wear that brown suit, Bill!" My dad then admitted that he could no longer button the pants of his brown suit and that he kept them on with a belt. Mom then got on the phone and said, "We are gonna get him a nice new suit and we ain't going to JC Penney's either!"
Now there is nothing wrong with Penney's. In fact, we shop there often. But my mom was letting me know that they were going to go all out for my dad's red-carpet moment. I will have stories from that night, I am sure. I can't wait to see my dad -- a farmer/drilling engineer -- rub elbows with TV's finest. Here's the deal: My folks do not really watch TV. Half the time the TV is on it is on The Weather Channel. Of course it is north Texas and the weather changes on a dime, so I understand. Having said that, I am not sure my dad will recognize a single person other than the cast of The Office.
Well, I better run. My baby will be waking up soon from her nap and I have laundry to do. I don't think anyone really tells you how much laundry you do once you have a toddler.
Hope you are all well,
