Each week we pick one woman who's done something to make us proud.
This week we're loving Mo'Nique for her Golden Globes victory, her inspirational acceptance speech and her refusal to conform to Hollywood expectations.
Everyone assumed Precious' Mo'Nique was a shoo-in for best supporting actress -- and they were right. And when she accepted her statue, her speech had viewers reaching for tissues. The actress was most emotional when thanking her husband Sidney Hicks -- to whom she's been married for four years but has known since grade school -- and recalled a memory that led to her dream coming true: "I look into the eyes of the man that I stood next to at 14 years old and said, 'We're gonna be stars...' He said, 'You first.'"
Mo'Nique may have had film critics' approval, but off camera, she's had some trouble winning over Hollywood insiders. After being criticized for skipping several high-profile events (and being accused of demanding cash for publicity appearances) her husband defended her, stating that his busy wife was opting to spend time with her three sons instead of attending the events. "She would rather play a bad mother in movies than play a bad one in real life," Hicks said.
The 43-year-old has made it clear that she's not interested in campaigning for awards and doesn't need to play celebrity games. And to further prove that point, the confident star went au naturale for the Golden Globes, strutting down the red carpet with unshaved legs. Now that's a daring choice in Hollywood!
