Have you heard the rumor that Jada Pinkett Smith and Will Smith have an open marriage? Of course you have. The gossip has followed the couple throughout their 15-year marriage, and many interviewers have tried in vain to get Will and Jada to come clean. On Wednesday, HuffPost Live asked Jada point-blank if she and Will had an open marriage. Her response was...interesting. (Watch below.)
"No, I think that people get that idea because Will and I are very relaxed with one another," said Jada. "And, I think, because of how I've answered questions of 'girl, you know, what would you do if he came home...' or 'being married to a big superstar, how do you deal with other women?'"
"I've always told Will, 'You can do whatever you want as long as you can look at yourself in the mirror and be okay,'" she continued. "Because at the end of the day, Will is his own man. I'm here as his partner, but he is his own man. He has to decide who he wants to be and that's not for me to do for him. Or vice versa."
Okay, so, that sounds like they're sleeping with other people, right? Or possibly that they would be sleeping with other people, if they didn't have to look at themselves in the mirror afterwards? Or is her roundabout answer simply another way of saying "mind your own business"?
Honestly, the couple has always given the media mixed signals about their arrangement. In 2005, Will basically told the UK Daily Mail that he and Jada ask for one another's permission to fool around.
"Our perspective is, you don't avoid what's natural. You're going to be attracted to people," he explained. "In our marriage vows, we didn't say 'forsaking all others.' The vow that we made was that you will never hear that I did something after the fact. If it came down to it, then one spouse can say to the other, 'Look, I need to have sex with somebody. I'm not going to if you don't approve of it -- but please approve of it.'"
Three years later, Will gave an almost identical interview to Now magazine. When asked how he'd feel if Jada did ask permission to cheat on him, Will replied, "I don't know how I'd feel. But I know I would react better than if I found out about it afterwards."
Then Jada appeared to shoot down the rumors in a 2009 NPR interview, saying, "I don't have an open marriage" -- but the full quote is a little more ambiguous. What she said was, "If I say to you I don't have an open marriage...and you don't trust that, well, there's nothing that I really have to say to anybody about anything because at the end of the day, I'm living my life and I'm happy."
In a more recent radio interview, Jada talked more openly about being attracted to people other than Will.
"We always have people that we're attracted to that we talk about. That don’t stop just because you're married," she said. "Somebody’s gonna always be prettier than me, and somebody’s always gonna be more in awe of him than me and he gonna be like 'yo she really like me' -- but as far as somebody being right for us…is there somebody right for a nice night? Maybe. But somebody that can sustain our life and sustain what we’ve built together, absolutely not!”
This is definitely a couple that plays by their own rules. And whatever those rules are, it definitely seems like they're on the same page!
