Jaden Smith of 'Karate Kid': A Star is Born

While a colleague of mine at iVillage recently wondered if television creates unrealistic dreams of stardom kids, it's now hit me that it's Hollywood in general that is causing these idealistic expectations.

My two daughters want to be stars. They'd love their own show on the Disney Channel, and as their mom I may be biased (okay, I definitely am), but I think they are worthy. And then there's reality -- I know the chances of success for them in the entertainment industry are slim to none, and this realization is only proven further when I look at this week's number one box office movie: The Karate Kid.

Jaden Smith, 11, plays the young boy who uses karate to overcome fear and bullying in this remake of the popular eighties film (which starred Ralph Macchio and Pat Morita). But Jaden is no ordinary Smith -- he is the son of mega stars Will Smith and Jada Pinkett Smith. He's Hollywood royalty! In fact, Jaden's first appearance at age 6 was on the television sitcom All of Us, created and produced by, wait for it... his parents. Jaden's second -- and breakout -- role came two years later in 2006's The Pursuit of Happyness when he starred as the son of a struggling salesman, played by, drum role please... Will Smith! Can you guess who produced Karate Kid, which, by the way, made back it's entire $50 million budget in it's opening weekend? That's right, none other than Jada and Will.

I'm not saying that Jaden isn't talented, but I doubt that he and his folks had to wait in a crowded hallway with other eager hopefuls and their parents to audition. Since this is definitely a case of "not what you know, but who you know," what chance is there for my budding actress/singer/dancer/model daughters? There's already a Karate Kid 2 in the works, but I won't get my hopes up for my girls -- I'm sure by then another child of Hollywood royalty -- Suri Cruise -- might be old enough to co-star!
