Jake Gyllenhaal is willing to endure a lot to prepare for a role: he'll not only lose weight or alternately put on muscle, but he'll also submit himself to being tased!
The 31-year-old actor endured the unpleasant ordeal while doing research for his role in the police drama End of Watch, in which he and Miguel Peña play cops that take on the Los Angeles drug cartel.
"It was not pleasant!" Gyllenhaal told Us Weekly at the film's premiere in L.A. Monday. "Thousands of volts of electricity through your body in a very short period of time was not fun. But ultimately, I can talk about it!"
And that wasn't the only bit of research Gyllenhaal subjected to, he says. He also did ride-alongs with the Inglewood Police Department to get a feel for what the cops go through on a regular basis.
"I had no idea what to expect. The guys I was with... are so seasoned and so professional," the actor said. On his first night, "We went to a call where someone had been shot -- it was a murder."
Gyllenhaal said it was the least he could do to make the film authentic, even though he felt humbled by the fact he was just pretending and the cops he was with have to live it every day.
"This was a moment where I think you recognize the absurdity of your own job in light of the situation that you're seeing," he confessed. "I thought to myself, 'What am I doing here, why am I here?' Then I realized we're trying to make a movie that's authentic. It was no joke to any of us, and that made it no joke to me."
