OMG, is that Jake Gyllenhaal? Where has he been hiding those arms?

The first trailer has just arrived for one of next summer's most exciting films: Prince of Persia: The Sands of Time. Based on a video game, the movie stars Gyllenhaal as a street-urchin-turned-warrior on a quest to steal some magic sand. Check it out:

Yes, "based on a video game." Yes, "magic sand." Yes, we know how it sounds, but seriously, look at Jake Gyllenhaal. Specifically, look at that shirtless scene around the 1:30 mark. Reese Witherspoon is one lucky lady.

Gyllenhaal's hot bod aside, the rest of the trailer is fun, with a sort of Indiana Jones-meets-Pirates of the Caribbean vibe. The rest of the cast is solid: Ben Kingsley -- always a good choice for hero or villain -- plays the cackling bad guy, while Alfred Molina flexes his Spider-Man 2 action skills, and Gemma Arterton one-ups her Bond girl act from Quantum of Solace.

But back to Jake. Unlike many good-looking actors, he's always taken unconventional leading-man roles (Donnie Darko, Brokeback Mountain, and Zodiac, to name a few). Now suddenly, he seems to be making a bid for action stardom. It can't be a coincidence that his promos for Prince of Persia are reminiscent of Russell Crowe in Gladiator or Brad Pitt in Troy. Seems like Gyllenhaal is shooting for exactly that kind of big-screen stardom: the kind that lets you fight magical armies and win Oscars. Smart guy.
