James Frey's memoir of addiction and recovery, A Million Little Pieces, had Oprah so riveted that she stayed up all night reading it -- and then broke her streak of classic literature by making it a book club selection. So naturally, the talk show queen was a little peeved when the book was revealed to be largely fictionalized. Winfrey invited Frey to defend his work on her show, then mercilessly dissected the books' lies and half-truths, saying, "I acted in defense of you... but now I feel that you conned us all." Two years later, Winfrey called Frey to apologize for the smackdown. All copies of A Million Little Pieces now include a disclaimer saying that the work is partially fictional.
