In the span of one day, gossip columnists were buzzing with news of a new celebrity couple -- and then reporting the denials. Tuesday morning, In Touch broke the news: "Multiple Sources Confirm: Katie Holmes and Jamie Foxx Are Dating."
The story featured sources who had witnessed the pair making covert, Mission: Impossible-style trips in and out of Holmes' apartment and Foxx's hotel room in New York City. It referenced their recent public display of affection, dancing together at a charity function in the Hamptons in August. (After that incident, Holmes' publicist had to issue a statement, clarifying the stars' relationship: "They're not dating. They've been friends for years.")
No doubt anticipating doubters, this week's InTouch story reminded readers that Foxx, 45, once told Oprah Winfrey, "Whoever you're dating, don't let anybody know!" The story also pointed out that it was in Foxx's best interest to keep the love affair under wraps, because he's close friends with Holmes' ex, Tom Cruise, his co-star in the 2004 film Collateral.
A fairly convincing argument, to be sure. But the story loses power when one of the stars involved in the covert relationship addresses the rumors head-on -- and shoots them down. "[The rumors] are 100 percent not true," Foxx told Nancy O'Dell on Tuesday's Entertainment Tonight. "In fact, it's quite hilarious because we simply danced at a charity event along with a lot of other people." And the footage isn't exactly explosive. They're simply holding hands! Check it out below:
As for the young and beautiful Holmes, she certainly must have plenty of romantic options, such as...
George Clooney, with whom she's been linked. Tongues began wagging when Holmes, 34, showed up at the premiere of his movie, Gravity, last month. But Clooney is about the same age as her ex. And we all saw how that turned out. Granted, Cruise and Holmes' age difference seems to have been the least of their problems.
Robert Pattinson is a little younger than Holmes (he's 27), but the Twilight star is just as pretty as she is -- and, of course, he is no longer with Kristen Stewart. And though he has been linked to Sean Penn's daughter, Dylan, reports say she's wary of his mega-fame, something that most likely wouldn't faze Katie.
And what about Foxx? Now that the actor insists he's not dating Holmes, we wonder if he knows that Miley Cyrus is no longer an engaged woman? Back in 2009, Foxx got in trouble for remarks he made about Cyrus (who was then 16 and still Disney-pure) on his Foxxhole Sirius radio show. She needs to "get like Britney Spears and do some heroin," he joked. "Do like Lindsay Lohan and start seeing a lesbian and get some crack in your pipe. Catch chlamydia on a bicycle seat."
Little did he know that four years later, Cyrus would be singing about the illegal drug molly and making out with girls in her music videos. Looks like she's all grown up and ready for you, Jamie! (Just kidding! Seriously. Just kidding, Jamie.)
