Things have gotten a little hairy between Janet Jackson and the folks at PETA. Jackson, 44, has recently become a spokeswoman for a luxury fur label called Blackglama. In a new black-and-white ad for the company, a grinning Jackson is swathed in a fur coat. But what's strange is that, in the past, the pop star has reportedly been quite adamant that she's on the anti-fur side of the issue.
While other celebs have worn fur for Blackglama ads (Diana Ross, Elizabeth Taylor, Lena Horne and Lauren Bacall), they haven't previously told PETA officials about their contempt for the highly controversial fashion statement.
According to People StyleWatch, PETA senior vice president Dan Mathews has sent a letter to Jackson, asking why she had a change of heart on the matter: "You and I spoke at length about the fur issue. You told me that you were always aggravated at photo shoots when stylists would try to throw fur on you and that you were even wary of wearing fake fur out of concern that it might actually be real or look real in photos and send the wrong message. You were very straightforward and sensible about it. What happened?"
Pamela Anderson, a longtime opponent of animal cruelty, has also voiced her opinion on the singer's new print ad, during an interview with Out magazine: "It’s disappointing. She has spoken out against fur before. I don’t know why some people stop listening to their heart. I guess some people get greedy, but it’s sad."
In fact, Anderson, 43, recently donned a teeny-tiny bikini for her own new ad (deemed too risque in Canada). As part of a pro-vegetarian campaign for PETA, the image of Anderson's body is labeled with body parts a butcher would recognize, to illustrate the fact that animals commonly slaughtered for human consumption have the very same ones.
