After eight seasons, is Jason Segel walking away from How I Met Your Mother? In a recent interview, the actor appeared to suggest that he's quitting the hit CBS sitcom in order to make more films.
"It's great to do some rated R stuff again, because I've been playing the nice guy for quite a long time now," Segel reportedly told the Austrian website Kurier.at. "That's why I'm gonna quit How I Met Your Mother after the eighth season."
"I've hit my 30s, the TV show that I've been doing for eight years is coming to its natural end, I'm feeling much more like, 'Okay, now it's time for phase three,'" the 32-year-old actor continued. "It's time I think."
We can't even imagine How I Met Your Mother without Marshall! Fortunately, we may not have to. According to Segel's rep, "something got lost in translation" with the Kurier.at interview, because "season 9 hasn't even been addressed yet." Likewise, CBS president Nina Tassler denied that anybody was leaving the show, telling the press that "negotiations are ongoing."
Here's where some of the confusion may have come in. The eighth season of How I Met Your Mother, which premieres in September, was supposed to be the show's last. However, after last season achieved record ratings, CBS is now talking about extending the comedy into a ninth season. Nothing has been confirmed yet, however -- and according to E! News, some of the cast members aren't keen on doing the show through 2014.
"Jason and Alyson [Hannigan] are the two least likely to want to do a season 9," says an insider. "It would take a lot of money to keep them. A lot."
Well -- if Lily and Marshall have to leave, at least they'll be leaving together... but we'd rather they didn't leave at all!
