VIDEO: Javier Bardem: Love Is "What We're Made For"

The Eat Pray Love star dishes about the meaning of love and why Julia Roberts is "amazing"

Javier Bardem eats, he (sort of) prays -- "I'm not very religious," he says, "but I think we all have this spiritual need" -- and he loves: Bardem, 41, took his low-profile relationship with Penelope Cruz, 36, to the next level when they married in early July. "Love, it's what we are made for and what makes a difference," Bardem tells iVillage in an exclusive interview.

In Bardem's new film, Eat Pray Love, starring Julia Roberts (in theaters Aug. 13), he plays Felipe, a man who sweeps Roberts's character, Elizabeth Gilbert, off her feet. As someone who likes to keep quiet about his personal relationship, Bardem admits there are real-life similarities with his character's romantic and sensual side, but adds, "At the end it's a game. You're a liar -- you're an actor."

One person who made that game easy for Bardem? Julia Roberts. "She's an amazing actress that makes me feel very safe, very comfortable," Bardem says of Roberts. "Julia is an actress that really counts on you to take the journey. She is not doing her thing and you have to follow her doing that. She wants to construct the whole thing together and see where it takes us."

Watch our exclusive video above to find out why Javier Bardem compares the filming of Eat Pray Love to the Olympics and why the Oscar nominee felt like the "new kid in town" on the set.
