I’m firmly in the “ice cream can make anything better” camp. Until now, I thought it could only fix broken hearts and bad days, but apparently it's also a delicious cure for the flu.
Jeni’s Splendid Ice Creams, an award-winning boutique creamery based in Columbus, Ohio, has developed Influenza Sorbet, a frozen concoction of cayenne pepper (to clear a clogged nose), honey (to soothe the throat), Maker's Mark bourbon (to help you relax), ginger and orange and lemon juices (antioxidants).
The sorbet is $12 for one pint (cure-alls don’t come cheap!) and is available online and at some specialty stores.
According to Jeni’s owner Jenni Britton Bauer, the recipe is inspired by a drink her grandmother made for her when she was sick. “My mother and grandmother made something very similar to that as a drink when I was a kid, even with the whiskey,” she told ABC News. “Whiskey, honey and lemon juice and that was our cough medicine and they would thin it out and make it into a hot drink.”
Bauer says her frozen version tastes like “a whiskey sour plus ginger.” Which sure beats a bowl of chicken soup.
My throat is starting to feel a little scratchy…does my forehead feel warm to you?
