Young Adults: Jennel Garcia ELIMINATED (11th Place)
Hometown: Rochester, MA
Mentored by: Demi Lovato
About her: This unassuming, baby-faced 18-year-old is a fan of Pat Benatar. She quickly gained her own fans when she surprised the judges with her rockin' performance of Grace Potter and the Nocturnals' "Paris (Ooh la la)." "You're a feisty little fireball," said L.A. Reid. "I am so feeling you." While others in this competition arrived with some pro singing experience under their belts, Garcia's background is in dance. During high school, she competed on dance teams, including one that opened for The Rockettes. But she's been singing since she was about eight, and even made use of fellow contestant Jillian Jensen's mother as her vocal coach. (Jensen was cut just before the group advanced to the Top 16.) Before Garcia sang Katy Perry's "Kissed a Girl," her mentor Demi Lovato counseled her not to flip her hair too much. The advice shook Garcia's confidence a bit, but she nailed the song -- and a spot in the live shows.
Why she got cut: It came down to two Young Adults -- Jennel and Paige Thomas -- for elimination on Nov. 15. It was visibly tough on their emotional mentor to make a choice, but Demi voted against Paige. (Presumably because of her total girl crush on Jennel!) However, the other three judges recognized Paige's undeniable talent and ultimately sent Jennel home.
