Does Jennifer Aniston need to learn to think before she speaks? Much of what she's had to say lately has been scrutinized by the public. (Just look at how Bill O'Reilly reacted to the actress' views on single motherhood!) Now it seems America's sweetheart is once again under fire for her remarks.
While visiting Live with Regis & Kelly this morning to promote her new comedy The Switch, Aniston, 41, got to talking about her recent Harper's Bazaar photo shoot in which she channeled Barbra Streisand. When co-host Regis Philbin told Aniston, "You're playing dress up!" the actress replied, "Yes, I play dress up! I do it for a living, like a retard!"
The backlash against Aniston for using the word (wich other celebs including Lindsay Lohan, Howard Stern and Sarah Silverman have also been criticized for using) has already begun. Peter Berns, CEO of The Arc (a nonprofit advocate for those with intellectual and developmental disabilities) wasn't shy about his opinions of the actress' slipup. "Frankly, someone in her position ought to know better," he told USMagazine.com. "She is using language that is offensive to a large segment of the population in this country. (It's) extraordinarily offensive and inappropriate."
But, he isn't the only one put off by Aniston's language. Kirsten Seckler, spokeswoman for the Special Olympics, also spoke to USMagazine.com. "People with intellectual disabilities have fought their whole lives for understanding and recognition," she said. "When people continue to use the R word, it's hurtful."
Seckler suggested people who use the word try replacing it with another "R" word, "ridiculous." "Think before you speak, especially when you're making fun of yourself or others," she said.
