Jennifer Connelly has always seemed unusually down-to-earth for an actress -- especially an actress who became famous as a teenager. So maybe it's not too shocking that she's talking about retiring to stay home with her children.
Connelly was interviewed this weekend by The Daily Mirror in conjunction with the U.K. release of 9 (she voices one of the ragdoll-like aliens). The actress spoke extensively to the interviewer about her family, including husband Paul Bettany and children Kai (age 12, from a previous marriage) and Stellan (age 6). (Funny sidenote: the author describes their home as "the celebrity-free Brooklyn area of New York." Because no one famous lives in Brooklyn.) "The family is the most important thing to me," the actress says. "Becoming a mother has made all the difference in terms of learning to take more responsibility for myself and my life. Parenthood changed the way I do everything."
When asked about her future career plans, Connelly insists that she's all about the fam now:
"The biggest thing for me is wanting my kids to grow up safely and have happy lives. To me, that's enough."
She does mention her upcoming Charles Darwin biopic Creation, but says she only took the job to be near her husband. "I loved the idea of being around and supporting him while he was doing it and that's why I got involved," Connelly confessed. "I thought it was an appropriate thing for us to do together and it felt very intimate working on it with Paul."
Connelly, now 39, first rose to stardom as a young teen in 1984's Once Upon a Time in America and 1986's The Labyrinth. She had a career resurgence in 2000 with Requiem for a Dream and Pollock, followed by 2001's A Beautiful Mind, for which she won a Best Supporting Actress Oscar (and where she met husband Bettany). If she does indeed quit acting, it will be poor timing on her part: Forbes just named her the second-most-valuable actress in Hollywood, earning $41 for producers per every dollar she makes on a film.
