Schlemiel, Schlimazel! Jennifer Garner & Jessica Biel as Laverne & Shirley?

Jennifer Garner and Jessica Biel became instant friends after costarring together in last month's ensemble comedy Valentine's Day. They were so obviously tight that costar Jamie Foxx called them "the new Laverne & Shirley." Turns out, he wasn't kidding.

TV Guide reports that a big-screen modern remake of the successful '70s sitcom -- which debuted in 1976 as a Happy Days spinoff -- is in the works, with plans to cast both Biel and Garner. Garner would play tough-talking Laverne de Fazio, originally played by Penny Marshall, while Biel would portray sweet and peppy Shirley Feeney, played by Cindy Williams on the original series. (Considering the actresses' respective images -- Garner as an ever-smiling playground mom, Biel as a Kilamanjaro-scaling single girl -- we would have expected it to be the reverse.) Foxx is reportedly writing the script, in cooperation with Valentine's Day director Garry Marshall -- the very same comedy pro who created the hit TV series in the first place.

We love the idea of a Laverne & Shirley comeback, especially if it enhances the star power of two talented actresses who are often stuck playing somebody's girlfriend. For the next big-screen sitcom remake, may we suggest Matt Damon and Ben Affleck in Perfect Strangers?
