Jennifer Hudson can truly say that her fiancé David Otunga saved her life.
The couple had only been engaged for a little over a month when tragedy struck Hudson's life in 2008. William Balfour, the estranged husband of her sister Julia, was accused of shooting and killing Hudson's mother Darnell, brother Jason and nephew Julian in late October (he pled not guilty of the charges and the case has not yet gone to trial, though Balfour is still in jail). Hudson disappeared from the spotlight for several months, returning again in 2009.
In a recent interview with Ebony magazine, Hudson admitted that part of the reason the experience was so traumatic for her was because she was supposed to be there with her family. She was originally going to fly to Chicago to visit her family for the week, but Otunga convinced her to come watch him fight in a World Wrestling Entertainment match instead.
"He wanted me to come out to Florida with him instead of going to Chicago. I flew out to see him; that's why I'm still here," Hudson said. "That's one of the things that saved my life. Because I could have been home with my mum then."
Clearly, the realization came hard on Hudson. She had a hard time holding it together during the magazine interview.
"I've never said that before, and I can't believe I just said that now," she said during the emotional interview. "But I didn't know."
