While accepting her Oscar for best actress, Jennifer Lawrence did something totally unexpected: She fell flat on her face. And she earned a place in our hearts forever.
Dressed in an off-white strapless Dior Haute Couture gown, the Silver Linings Playbook actress was the picture of elegance at the Academy Awards -- that is, until Jean Dujardin ripped open the envelope and called her name. A stunned Lawrence headed toward the stage. Unfortunately, the many layers of her floor-length skirt made climbing the stairs a challenge, and she immediately tripped over all that fabric. It looked a little something like this:
Thankfully, Lawrence recovered quickly, and managed to turn her awkward moment into a totally adorable one. "You guys are only standing up because you feel bad that I fell, and that's really embarrassing, but thank you," she told the audience as they gave her a standing ovation. Lawrence kept her speech and thank-yous short, but took the time to give a shout-out to fellow nominee Emmanuelle Riva, who was celebrating her 86th birthday. The happy actress left the stage in a daze. As acceptance speeches go, it was pretty much perfect.
The whole thing just solidified Jennifer Lawrence's spot on our Fantasy BFFs list. (Come on, you know you have one.) Not only is she spontaneous and quick to laugh at herself, but she seems to have genuine gratitude for all the good things that have happened to her lately. She's happy to share the spotlight with somebody like Riva. Also, she doesn't care if you think she's fat. And she brags about her breasts being uneven. Plus, if her idol Meryl Streep walks into a room, she will make you stop talking so that she can "creepily stare" at her. How can you not love that?
Just to make her more endearing, she's completely accident-prone; the dress-tripping moment was Lawrence's second major wardrobe malfunction this awards season. While climbing the stairs to accept her Golden Globe, Lawrence accidentally hiked up her blue Dior gown, revealing a sheer panel over her legs and making it look like her dress had ripped in half.
"It was supposed to do that, though. I planned it," she later joked. "I was concerned people would start talking about the award that I won, and my acting, so I thought I'd pull a stunt just to get things back to where they need to be."
Yep -- that's our girl.
